Cucumbers - to me, the slightly unwelcome addition to the top of some lettuce leaves...whoever thought you could make them into a splendid salad on their own?!
Well, thats what happened yesterday while visiting Ruth Stoltmann. An elderly lady now living in Alness who has had an amazing life journey. She grew up near Leipzig, the daughter of very successful restaurant owners (she still owns a few plates that they used) She was only 10 when war broke out and remembers quite clearly fleeing the Allied soldiers who destroyed their whole village. After the war she came to Scotland as an au pair (where she met her late Polish husband Dominik) and settled in the Highlands having lived for a time at Kindeace. She also happens to be the mother of Sabine Cross - who made homemade bread for us a number of weeks ago.
Gurkin Salat - as its known in German - is quite special, delicious with fish, and another welcome addition to our cookbook!
Think we maybe have 5 or 6 recipes to go but we're not complaining!

Last week was a great week for us at DUFI - a day of brainstorming and creative thinking about Invergordon, putting our proposal together and presenting it to the board, a day in the office putting together quotes, finishing a few small jobs and getting some invoices done (unfortunately we can't do everything we do for nothing!), a day on the West Coast doing a community workshop and then on Friday I managed to get out of the office and do a photoshoot! Almost the perfect mix of creativity and practicality for us...

Anhyhow, thought I would attached a few shots from Friday for you. While shooting for a client up at Culloden Battlefield I took a few pics of the building. Think its a really fantastic piece of architecture designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects (of Scotlands first Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008 fame). It blends really well into the environment with its choice of materials, exaggerated length and the way it sits on the horizon and skyline when viewed from the battlefield itself.

What a day - the sun is shining, we've had lunch and back in the office after a trip to Ullapool for a workshop at an talla solais (a visual arts centre in the village with great facilities). Are going to be doing a few workshops there with a group of pupils with the intention of designing a big piece for somewhere in the village.
Had fun today with grids and getting them to sketch something small in a pixel pattern that we hope they will be able to spray their own tags next week.
We made a wee example for them ourselves (Pacman based!) and sprayed it on the pathway with chalk.
Followed this up with a trip to Rhue Art and the new gallery. Fantastic space to show in... Good to catch up with James and Flick Hawkins over a mug of homemade lemon and ginger tea and hear what new work James is experimenting with.
Back in the office now and doing paperwork. Ah, the yin and yang of being an artist.

So last night was a bit of a milestone as far as the Invergordon Off The Wall project went. All three artists were asked to present proposals for their pieces of Public Art for the town and it was a nerve wracking experience for us all.
We have kept our cards pretty close to our chest up to this point so it really was something new for them to get their heads around. It all went extremely well with a general consensus of agreement on our plans which was a pleasant surprise to us!
Our work so far has been centred around the gathering of stories and experiences (using the cookbook and Gaelic storytelling/song as a tool) and this idea of being "rooted and grounded" was a starting point for us. It really felt like our beginnings should be with a tree. The three languages are represented by upright pillars that are united by a circular ring of stainless steel. The work will constantly evolve as the seasons change and tree grows around and through the different sculptural elements.
It is proposed that the ground works will include text that runs down the base of the pillars onto the ground and out in three directions to represent roots and emphasise the cultural diversity of people within this small Highland town.
More will follow as time goes on but the works to go to planning for permission in the next month and the hard work begins after that...

We've been working hard for the past couple of days for our Invergordon Off The Wall sculpture. Brainstorming, researching and putting together a few sketches and ideas for a meeting with the board tonight. Not wanting to give much away just now but lets just say we know a lot more about trees now...

Have also attached a few more images from another couple of our interviews with some of our chefs for the cookbook we are creating. We had a great evening with Father Reese where he entertained us with stories and made us one of his favourite meals - eggs on toast! Not the most difficult meal to make but just as valid as any other recipe...
We followed that up with visits to Barbaraville to meet the lovely Louisa and then Rhonda and her husband Sid. Great conversation and lots of laughs as well as great food (rice pudding and the cookie dough for Ice-cream sundae being standouts for me)
Both of us can't remember the last time we have enjoyed the research aspect of the job so much. Glad to say we still have more to do!

Music is pretty much essential to us in the studio, workshop or on site. Its a fuel for creativity...

Been a long day yesterday and got back up North at about 10pm but it was worth it... Spent the day finishing our large wall pieces in a new optometrists showroom in Inverness (Goskirk Pettinger) and it was great fun. We ran into a few challenges last week but dealt with them and its looking pretty good now. Idea behind it began with a discovery in an old kids textbook of a description of sight and used the words "without light we would be lost" together with a couple of other statements we have included on the walls. The eye is an incredibly complex and beautiful part of the body and even something as seemingly simple as eye colour is pretty amazing. We took an iris and took a very thin vertical strip from the middle of this including the pupil and expanded it horizontally to create a series of stripes which made up our back wall. We also used a couple of sketches of lightbulbs together with rods and cones which we tied together with the stripes... we think it works and look forward to getting to see it when the shop is complete. In the meantime, here are a couple of images of the work as it was completed today.

Another couple of weeks have gone by and we have had some pretty cool things to do...

A photo shoot for a local distillery, designed a rather sweet book cover, completed another magazine, spent 3 days painting an interior of a new boutique optometrists in Inverness, looking at creative design solutions for signage and wayfinding for a few clients, meeting and interviewing some Gaelic speakers in Invergordon and had another meal with a fabulous elderly couple...Whew quite a lot really, not exactly taking things easy as we enter a new year. Will maybe try to blog about some of that in the next few days but in the meantime want to focus on the meal - we do like our food!

As the continued research into our work for Invergordon Off The Wall we met with the Lippoks in Tain. Their journey here was quite amazing. Paul was a conscripted German Paratrooper who was only in the army for 6 months before he was captured at Anzio towards the end of WWII. His journey took him via Casablanca, Texas, oklahoma, California, Panama, Southampton and Perth before ending up in Kildary as an 18 year old POW. At the end of the war and after being demobbed he stayed and is still here...

His wife Ehrentraut (like Paul himself) grew up in Silesia, Germany (now part of Poland) and was only a young girl during the war. When the war ended she suffered badly at the hands of the Russians enduring typhoid and starvation before escaping to West germany. She met Paul after posting an ad in a German Catholic newspaper - who needs match.com?!

They told us stories about growing up, life in Germany, life in the Highlands, family and faith all while cooking very traditional German food - chicken noodle soup and nuss torte (nut cake). A wonderful way to spend a morning and lunch.

We feel that this particular one needs a bit more work and maybe a name. Any suggestions from out there? Not exactly a Moncchichi anymore... pencil leg, eyepatch, earring, sword etc.

Happy New Year one and all! Hope 2012 is a good and blessed one for everyone out there.
In the true spirit of New Year we have made a few resolutions that we will endeavour to stick at (no promises...)

1. Get a new website!!! Having the blog is great but doesn't really work as a portfolio of our work

2. Keep the blog running and up to date (something we have improved on in the last few months)

3. Cut down our workload a bit and get some new screen-printing done

4. Spend some time outside the North - 2011 was very much a Highland Year (with a few exceptions)

5. Grow our own vegetables. DUFI Market Garden Produce anyone?! No Charlie Dimmock or goats though...

Another day - another meal! The recurring excitement of being fed was nurtured by a visit to meet with Jean, a nurse from Manilla in the Philippines who lives and works in Invergordon.
We were treated to a traditional dessert called Leche Plan - a milk and egg dessert similar to creme caramel but a lot better...
Jean told us about her travels which have included time working in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as well as her impressions of Invergordon and the Highland weather.
Another meal planned tonight when we go visit Father Reese. Who said research was boring?!

Last Friday we made our way to Edinburgh for the book launch of Rough Cut Nation at the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery. It was a good evening and we enjoyed ourselves immensely! The new building has certainly changed and it was good to see it before its official opening.

Its been a few years now since Rough Cut Nation and the knock-on effects that have followed. It was needless to say, a great project - had plenty of publicity and ended up being one of the galleries most successful shows ever. Al and I had a blast working there and met some great folk and made a bunch of new friends - many of whom have worked with us on other projects (In Honour of September and Are We There Yet?)

Have put a few images here of the book together with an image we found while clearing the office the other week. Things don't change - we're still clowning around...

Just over a week ago Inverness was host to the fine folks from Team Recoat - including Death Rattles, Syrkus, Lyken, Rue Five, Elph, FiST and Kirsty Whiten - while they used cars as their canvas at Rose Street Car Park under the auspices of IOTA.
I was there on the Thursday to document the beginning of the process - mostly masking and a bit of paint being laid down. Was disappointed I couldn't be there on Friday too but it was good to meet old friends and some new ones and see the work as it was unfolding...no doubt there will be more images up on the IOTA website soon.
Enjoyed talking to Ali and Amy from Team Recoat and getting their thoughts on the street art scene in Scotland just now - more power to them as they promote Scottish artists!!

Its been a pretty frenetic week or so as we have worked ridiculous hours trying to complete a commission for Eden Court Theatre in the Victorian Market, Inverness. We worked Monday to Friday last week beginning at 5.30pm and working till 2.00am - even 4.00am on Friday morning!
Our brief was to recreate Victorian styled Fairy tales and we gave them a wintry twist with the choice of colours etc. We used a huge amount of stencils and a fair whack of spraypaint - not the kind of thing we could do during the day!
After completing this we were then asked by Highland Council to do a Mail Box for Santa so we were back in yesterday doing that as well - Polar bear and North Pole included!
Definitely can see we are in the Christmas spirit...

Over the last couple of months we have had the privilege of working with two different artists on album artwork.

The first album, The Quiet in the Land, is calamateur's latest and is a beautiful and honest evolution of his past sounds. This is the sixth piece of cover art we have designed for calamateur, and as always it has been an inspirational listen - another great album!
We designed the cover artwork as well as a 13 page album artwork download, with artwork for each track.

For the second album we did a photo-shoot and design work for Dagger & Colin Gordon's new album Like Father / Like Son.

"Arguably Scotland’s leading mandolin player for many years and he’s clearly passed his talent for negotiating strings and frets onto his guitar-playing oldest son, Colin. The pair are captured on this splendidly intimate album playing older Scottish pipe marches, dance tunes and airs, many of them long neglected ... a splendidly intimate album." The Herald

It has been ten years since we last worked with Dagger on his album Frozen River, so it was good working with him again and we look forward to working with him again in 2021 on his next album!

We were privileged to be part of a very important day for the Polish residents of Invergordon and beyond as they remembered the fallen at the Polish Remembrance Service. A large group of about 150 gathered around the Polish War Memorial and had a short service with full colours and standards from various groups which was incredibly moving to be part of. Sang Psalm 23 in the open air while leaves fell off the trees, birds sang and the sun shined... it was pretty powerful stuff!

Was intrigued by one gentleman in particular called Marek Straczynski who is Scottish president of the Stowarzyszenie Polskich Kombatantów (SPK - or Polish Ex-Servicemen Association) He carried a standard that had come all the way from Porto Allegre in Brazil carried by Polish soldiers in WWI. Took a number of photographs of him and have included a couple below. Also took a few shots using old Polaroid 690 sheet film and thinking of maybe developing a series of these based on the families. The one attached here is a gentleman called Otto Stainke who is well into his 80's now - not that you could tell - we joked with his son Mike "he looks better than you!"

All this is part of our research for Invergordon Off The Wall so it was good for us to meet some of the families who remain in the area - the Stainke's, Malicki's, Symborski's, Majewski's and Zawinki's among others... We look forward to talking to them about there experiences living in the area - a big thanks to Vanda Zawinski and her family in particular for allowing us to be part of the day.

Al has mentioned before the joys of our job and the exciting things we sometimes get to do. We had another one of those nights on Monday when we visited the Cross family in Nigg. As part of the Invergordon Off The Wall project we have been carrying on our research phase and did our first real interviews with Sabine and Richard while they prepared food. Sabine made her Fathers recipe for homemade bread ("Daddy's Bread")which he had perfected over a number of years. While preparing everything she recounted stories about her past growing up in Invergordon as well as the amazing story of her fathers escape from Poland during WWII. Richard made his famous "Honey and Mustard Chicken" which only differed from the recipe on the back of the jar with the addition of red peppers instead of green!Needless to say Sabine's bread was absolutely amazing served warm with butter and her homemade blackcurrant jam... ah, the trials we have to put up with in the name of art!
There is a real flurry of activity here today as we get to the end of the week. Big job starting next week in Inverness and we are busy doing Risk Assessments and Method Statements...all artwork created and both Al and I keen to get started.Imagine we will have a few blogs up in the next few days to keep you all in the loop.

Fin spent his Saturday with some members of the Northern Cell of Scottish Photographers in Dingwall. It was a surprising breath of fresh air with some really inspiring work on show by the folks there who had come from as far away as Aberdeen.

A mix of work including a series of images shot on a mobile phone on the London Underground, images shot from crumbling WWII bases in Scotland, some interesting pinhole work, handmade books, digital slideshows, images and poetry...very diverse but all inspiring!

I was a touch disorganised and left things till the day before but showed a few prints from work I did for The Big Willow a couple of years ago as well as a selection of travel work on the laptop - really could have done with prints of some of those.

Hoping to maintain contact with some of the guys and maybe meet up again over the winter to talk all things photographic...

Have attached some of the images that were taken over a 2 year period of The Big Willow project (by U.S. artist Patrick Dougherty) from site selection, through growth, construction and ultimately its destruction. A series of 42 images in a portfolio were produced to accompany an exhibition of the work.

It's been a few weeks since we updated folks on what we are up to but it's been a busy old time.

We've picked up a couple of interesting commissions that we have began working on.

One of which is for the Victorian Market in collaboration with Eden Court. We have been asked to design and paint a series of panels for the interior of the market for the Winter Festival on the theme of Fairy Tales. These will form the backdrop to a series of live performances by Eden Court. This will be a lot of fun and give us both the chance to read Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson again!

Gingerbread houses, red capes, wolves, apples and brave nights battling to save the damsel in distress...definitely something to look forward to.

On a separate note, following on from the meeting we had with the Catholic Church as part of our Invergordon Off The Wall project we are meeting with our first couple of "chefs" on Monday to get some recipes and try some food. Not a bad job is it?! Will post some photos of that next week.

Like anyone who runs a business, there are parts of our job that are the daily grind of work: spread sheets, bills, paperwork, deadlines, filing and tax returns. However, we would be among the first to admit that our job as artists and designers is pretty sweet a lot of the time - we get to make a modest living doing what we love and we get to be creative. A lot of our projects are a lot of fun (e.g. spray-painting anything we can!).

In public arts one of the challenges can be 'community consultation'. On a wet and cold October evening having to go out to a 'workshop' might not sound the most appealing. However, last night highlighted one of the joys of what we have to do. We found ourselves sitting in the back hall of St. Joseph's RC Church, in Invergordon. We were eating: samosas, spring rolls, scones, brownies, and a table full of other delights. Around the room were a welcoming and friendly group of people, representing seven nationalities, highlighting the diverse culture of the town.

This was the first steps with one of the groups we are planning to work with in our Foundations project through Invergordon Off The Wall, and we are very much looking forward to the journey.

We spent last Thursday up in John O'Groats working on a commission to produce a temporary Start/Finish line for all those fine folks who are known as End to Enders.

Working with Ian McKee at GLM architects and our client Natural Retreats we did something very simple and based loosely on the original line that sat outside the hotel in the good old days...

While the rest of the country was basking in sunshine we spent the first part of our day sitting in the car avoiding the lashing rain!!! Road surface left a lot to be desired but we're happy with the artwork and its looking pretty good...Used epoxy road paint and reflective glass beads - both products that were new to us but give a good effect (Thanks to Nino and his team at Promain for their help)

The summer is over, and projects move on. Exhibitions finish and artworks come and go, but it is not very often that you get to see your artwork torn down by a demolition team. We had hoped to be there when the the extensions to the John O Groats hotel were torn down, but unfortunately the team had to move quickly and took the building down two days early - so we missed it.

The upside is that they took some photos of there own. Here are a few shots of our piece Are We There Yet being deconstructed!

Fin has just returned from an inspiring six days in Manhattan. But while he was away we had an interesting turn of events. Last Tuesday, at around lunchtime we received a call inviting us to meet a Japanese professor who was interested in meeting Highland artists. An hour later we found ourselves in Inverness having a very interesting chat with Professor Makoto about the potential for some international collaboration.

It is early days, but the conversation has begun and we at DUFI are very excited about the potential of another collaborative adventure!

Its been a busy last few weeks and we have began in earnest working on the Foundations project in Invergordon. A couple of sessions of DUFI Scrabble (we have still to write the rules...) resulted in us getting a list of some great words to describe a sense of place and was a fun way to introduce ourselves to the people of Invergordon as well as visitors from the Queen Elizabeth (Cunard liner was in dock on Monday). In the next few months we will meet with some of the community groups to begin the consultation stage properly and are looking forward to that - got some interesting sessions planned!

DUFI has entered the next level of digital awareness and has began a Facebook page. Okay it was a struggle to convince us but Jonny persuaded us to enter the 21st century and stop being complete Luddites.

As promised here are some more shots of the paint job up in John O'Groats. A great week of spray paint, rollers and sunburn!

An amazing opportunity to paint the entire exterior of the derelict John O'Groats hotel. Our concept was to bring some childlike excitement and wonder back to John O’ Groats. The excitement of holidays, destinations, journeys and travel. The hotel presented itself as a great canvas to work on, with a massive expanse of sea and sky in the background. From a distance the hotel now looks like some offbeat fun fair has come to towm - with closer inspection individual works by each of the artist can be discovered.

The artist who worked with DUFI (us!) were: Richie Comming, Mike Inglis, Fraser Gray and Martin McGuinness. Thanks to everyone involved.

Well, what a week it has been - we have been in John O'Groats since last Sunday night, painting the old John O'Groats hotel. We have been painting with Martin McGuinness, Fraser Gray, Mike Inglis and Richie Cummming. The weather has been amazing, in the words of Richie "I feel like I am painting some big old house in Italy!". And the response has been great. We will post more details and photos later, but for now lets just say this is the biggest piece we have done to date. Here are a couple of photos to give you a wee taster.

Oh, and by the way - there is a launch event tomorrow (Saturday 2 July) and a wee shindig at night so if you can make it up it would be great to see you.

Well, what a week it has been!

Work has been progressing well for the John O'Groats project, and the excitement is building as we get organised for a good week of painting.

On Wednesday morning we were delighted to find out we had been awarded a contract to create a permanent artwork for Invergordon. Titled Foundations, it is part of the Evolution Project which is organised by Invergordon Off The Wall. We plan to work with the local community to create interactive sculptures based on local words and stories. Below is one of the sketch proposals from our submission.

And what is with the image of the moose? Well it just got better on Wednesday evening as we discovered that we had been shortlisted as one of the four atists being considered for a permanent artwork in Edmonton, Canada! The Kingsway/Royal Alex LRT Public Art Project, commissioned by Edmonton Arts Council - a great organisation who are doing some fine work in "The City of Champions". We are delighted to be collaborating with Matt Baker on this application, and are really looking forward to the opportunity of working with him again.

Great news! Last week we were awarded a new commission from HIE. The commission is for a temporary artwork in John O'Groats. We have joined forces with some other great artists: Skint, Mike Inglis (Space Boy), Soul Relics and Macism - all of whom we worked with on Rough Cut Nation.

The project is entitled "Are We There Yet?" and is going to be an exploration of childhood, the excitement of holidays, destinations, journeys and travel. We are planning to use the old John O'Groats hotel as our canvas - covering large areas of the building in paint (I don't think ventilation should be a problem!).

Look out for a week long spray-painting session towards the end of June!

Fin went back to school last week to do 3 days training with Adobe Photoshop and is now ACA accredited. First certificate he has had in 14 years so quite happy with himself!

Its been a while again since our last entry and things have been busy. Applying for lots of jobs - Canada, Sweden, England and of course Scotland - so lots of paperwork and beauracracy! Thankfully, we have had the expert assistance of Jonny to organise timelines and remind us of deadlines...
Despite all this we have managed to do a fair bit of creative work. It has been fun problem solving each of the applications we submitted along with the chance to do a bit of research into some possible new materials to work with as well. Will just have to wait and see.
Our big news is that we managed to get all the artwork completed for our Alvaston project and it as also been approved by Derby City Council so that has been something to celebrate! Now will just have to wait for the programme of works to be arranged but probably looks like it won't happen until 2012.
Have attached a couple of images here as a bit of a taster - one is a section of the central reservation which will be over 80m long and is constructed from stainless and galvanised steel. The other image is of the font we have developed for Alvaston. The stories we uncovered from our visits there form the basis of the artwork so it was only appropriate we should create a font for the town. Nice and simple - "honest and down to earth" kind of sums it up.

A dominant feature in the recent development of contemporary art has been the erosion of boundaries and classifications. It is no longer unusual for artists to work across different mediums, combining elements from painting, photography, collage and sculpture into new forms. Even design, an area which has historically been regarded as a separate discipline, or even craft, has moved into the Gallery space and is being incorporated into the work of many hybrid designer/artists to wide acclaim. From graphic screen prints and radically sculptural furniture, to artwork which uses typefaces, iPods and Ikea, the dividing line between Art and Design is no longer as rigid as it used to be.

What separates Art and Design? What are the implications of a designer's use of a visual language in order to sell products and fulfil a brief? Is the increasing prevalence of Design a symptom of our low-attention span consumer culture? Is its intrusion into Art a threat or an exciting new development?

These are some of the questions that art and design critic Alex Coles, artist Matthew Darbyshire, artist/designer Scott King and design critic/curator Rick Poynor will discuss as they explore the contradictory and inspirational relationship between Art and Design.

Speakers:

Alex Coles
Alex Coles is an art and design critic. In 2002 he first used the term designart in an article, and since then it has become a major trend within the design world. He is the author of 'DesignArt' (Tate Publishing, 2005) and editor of 'Design and Art' (MIT/Whitechapel, 2007). His forthcoming book, 'The Transdisciplinary Studio', focuses on the studio models of Olafur Eliasson, Jorge Pardo, Abake, Martino Gamper and Konstantin Grcic.

Matthew Darbyshire
Matthew Darbyshire studied Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art and completed a Post Graduate Diploma at the Royal Academy. He has had solo shows at Herald St, London, Gasworks the Hayward Project Space and his work has been included in group shows such as Nought to Sixty at the ICA, Newspeak: British Art Now at the Saatchi Gallery and the British Art Show 7, a Hayward Gallery touring show. Matthew was commissioned by the Frieze Foundation to create a ticket hall for Frieze Art Fair 2010. His work is in collections internationally including the Kadist Art Foundation Paris, and the Arts Council Collection, UK. He teaches at Chelsea College of Art and at Kensington and Chelsea College. 2011 will see Matthew take part in The Shape We Are In, a group show at the Zabludowicz Collection in London and New York.

Scott King
Scott King trained as a graphic designer. He worked as Art Director of i-D and Creative Director of Sleazenation magazines. King occasionally produces work under the banner 'CRASH!' with writer and
historian Matthew Worley. King's work has been exhibited widely in London, New York and European galleries including the ICA, KW Berlin, Portikus, White Columns, Kunstverein Munich and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Scott's first monograph 'Art Works' was recently published by JRP|Ringier, Zurich.

Rick Poynor
Rick Poynor is a writer, critic, lecturer and curator specialising in design, media and visual culture. He founded Eye, co-founded Design Observer and contributes columns to Eye and Print. His latest book is
Uncanny: Surrealism and Graphic Design, previous books include the bestseller Typography Now: The Next Wave and No More Rules: Graphic Design and Postmodernism amongst many others. In 2004, he was curator of a major survey exhibition 'Communicate: Independent British Graphic Design since the Sixties', at the Barbican Art Gallery, London. Poynor is a former Visiting Professor at the postgraduate Royal College of Art in London and has lectured and spoken about design and visual culture at public events and design schools throughout Europe, the US, Australia and China. Rick also appeared in the hit documentary Helvetica in 2007.

Last Friday evening our exhibition, Teenage Kicks & Other Works, opened at Timespan. The exhibition includes several new pieces of work as well as our installation Teenage Kicks.

As part of the exhibition we created a limited edition series of six screenprints on Fabriano and Arches BFK papers that have been embossed with a 12" vinyl LP. All prints are based on lyrics from a song on each of five albums that influenced us in our teenage years.

Its been a busy old few weeks as we welcome you to 2011. One of the first things we wanted to achieve was to get the Hilton Village Panels completed and installed. All the hard work had really be done by all the kids at Hilton Primary, Inverness Royal Academy and the Hilton Youth Cafe who really had been most magnificent in this project. A particular word of thanks has to go to young Jordan who showed great commitment and turned up to other group sessions as well to help out.

We really were genuinely pleased with the work they had done as this was a new material for us to work on and was a bit of an experiment for us. There are things we feel we can adapt for our own work as well so all in all we are quite happy little woodland bunnies!

On Wednesday afternoon, in a previously dull and damp underpass in Greenock, things were different. There was a warm glow of light, the bustle of people gathering, carols playing and festive cheer. The event was the official opening of the Westburn Underpass featuring our most recent work 3573 Oak Leaves.

As the more acute among us might have guessed, among other things, the artwork contains 3573 oak leaves (at least that is the total we got when we counted - we figured that anyone willing to count them all is welcome to correct us if we have it wrong!).

In our research for the project a few things caught our attention. The name Greenock among other things has become entangled with Green Oak (apparent folk etymology), this is something that is reflected in local shop and place names. The Westburn Underpass is the main pedestrian links from the bus station to the town centre. We wanted the artwork to reflect both the transient nature of the space as well as the deep rooted history in the town itself. And, as in much of our work, we wanted to reinforce a local sense of belonging and pride in place. This matched with carefully selected lighting solutions creates a space that is in the words of Reg Gove from Lightfolio "...a destination worthy of note rather than simply a transit space..."

As part of the project, we asked the people of Inverclyde to nominate 50 Local Heroes and the final list includes famous individuals from history to contemporary locals who are valued (from parents to painters). These names have been integrated into the artwork and form the acorns of our oak tree. Places are more than bricks and mortar and what makes a place "Great" is the people who live there.

The client, Riverside Inverclyde, put on a great opening event for all Local Heroes and contractors. Bubbly and some great food was provided for the group of 70 or so invited guests. The official opening was done by Provost Michael McCormick and the ribbon cut by Carrie Gibson (one of the Local Heroes and Everest Summiteer)
All our surviving Local Heroes were presented with a medallion by the Provost to match the embedded plaques in the ground or on the wall as a memento of the day.

A few big thanks need to be expressed to all who made this such a great project for us to be a part of.

It's all gone a bit manic over the last few weeks. The year is drawing to a close and, as well as frantically trying to get a few jobs complete, we are looking forward to the opening of the Westburn Road Underpass, in Greenock, tomorrow!

It's been a great project to work on and we'll give you the lowdown in the next wee while - with some images and maybe some video of the underpass (if we get the chance to film any...). Another recently finished project that we completed the beginning of November. We spent a few days with Libby, Chic and the gang at J12 in Glasgow working on a wall for their youth centre drop-in.
The starting point for this was about 6 months ago with a discussion with the group about what they would like on their wall and the idea of revolution and change was settled on. Using themes of old Communist propaganda we came up with this design.

Incorporating the kids themselves into the image ( a recurring theme in community projects!) was a lot of fun - one of the kids dogs appeared and we even snuck in a chicken...

Libby said "Everyone loves the wall, lots of “Wows” when people go through for the first time. Thank-you again for all your work, especially the way way you were with the kids"

The text that runs along the top is Hebrew and is a tattoo on the Chic's forearm. It means "Change is Possible" - can't argue with that.

A Highland lad, Jonny has been taken on as Project Manager. Hopefully this will take some of the pressure off us in terms of office management and give us more time for badger related activities

Everybody’s got something to hide except for me and my monkey

We are a fair bit behind in terms of updates to work we have done but here is another new entry that shows the finished work at Broxburn swimming pool. (There are also more great images on the Shale People site). This job presented us with some new challenges and allowed us to look at the way we represented the work slightly differently. Instead of "fighting" with the brick pattern we decided to use that as a series of guides to work in. This is now the largest piece we have done (if the 4 bits of wall are taken together is a bit bigger than Jesus!) Our colour pallette was picked to reflect the two locations and think it is sympathetic to both the building itself and the environment that surrounds it.

This was completed over 5 days of mixed weather at the end of September with help from the pupils at Broxburn Academy. They really go stuck in and were a valuable asset as we worked hard through sun, rain and wind!

We also have to extend a huge thanks to recent art school graduate Dani-Louise Smith who really was a big help over the week and really seemed to enjoy working in a new medium - we look forward to seeing some of her new work with spraypaint!

Thanks again to Shirley-Anne Murdoch of Artichange who organised this. As usual her organisation made everything go smoothly - right down to the official photocall on the last day when we had local MP Graeme Morrice, SNP Councillor and Artichange member Janet Campbell, Academy Teacher Claire Anderson and Business Development officer Laura Machnik all joining us together with some of the pupils and the fabulous Betty Glenn (nee Curran) who really didn't look like she was old enough to be our Gala Queen from 1953! Amazing how all that came to light over the course of the week and we are obviously delighted that someone recognised her from the artwork - all we have to wait for now is someone to recognise our Quoit playing miner from early last century...

Fin has been spending some time in jail recently – not staying, only passing through (contrary to some rumours that might be circulating) while working on a project with the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in HMP Open Estate Castle Huntly. Using pinhole photography both inside and outside of the prison setting, Fin is working with offenders to produce a body of work for inclusion in a major exhibition due to be shown November 2010. His last visit took place on Monday and all images for inclusion in the exhibition have been selected by the participants so its now just time to put it all together.

School’s out for summer...

Cauldeen Road Primary was completed earlier this year and we were delighted to work on this with Richard Jack from Highland Council and the pupils and staff of the school. A big thanks to everyone who helped us with this and also to the headteacher George Glass for his willingness to involve the pupils of the school.

A new colour scheme and exterior/interior graphics were devised that highlight the ethos of the school. Being stuck up a cherry-picker with an 8ft x 4ft stencil in a howling gale in November was pretty scary (ask Al…) but we got there!
The school refurbishment was officially recognized earlier this year to coincide with its 40th Anniversary. It's just taken us this long to get there and take some pics to put up here. Will try to be more on the ball!

A couple of weeks ago we spent two days work-shopping with the pupils of Broxburn Academy as the Shale People project got underway. To say this was a baptism of fire for us would be an understatement. About 120 pupils from S4 worked intensively over the two days researching material to inspire work on both our piece of work titled Clocking Off (for Broxburn Swimming Pool) as well as Andrew Crummy’s mural (in Uphall). Under the incredibly calm direction of the project leader Shirley-Anne Murdoch, we managed to unearth some really interesting material that we will work into the final design which we hope to paint in August/September.

Day One really was the information gathering day while on Day Two we had a much more practical hands-on session where the pupils designed and cut-out their own stencils. Thankfully, Shirley-Anne even was calm enough to arrange good weather for us as well to allow the pupils to chalk the designs in the school quadrangle! A tiring two days but thanks again to the pupils, staff and especially Shirley-Anne for arranging and organising this. Looking forward to painting (also handy to know we have a decent bed to sleep in when we are there - Fin’s brother Dunc very conveniently in Uphall … perfect for beer and steaks!)

The Inverness Streetscaping project has now been complete for almost a year and looking back it was perfect for us. We learned a lot with a bit of expert guidance from our good friend Matt Baker and the steadying help of Susan Christie.

To thank the participants in the streettext project, we held a small gathering for all the contributors on 29 April at Rendevouz Café on Church Street. This was at one time the old record store for us as kids. A place where we would buy the odd bit of vinyl, but more often than not cassettes of the latest ‘Now That’s What I call Music’ (for those of you under 18 please ask a real grown up what a cassette is…).

In true Highland style we have the impact of emigration and travel with contributors having moved as far away as New Zealand, the U.S. and even Devon. A bit difficult for these folk to be there on the night but they were not forgotten…

A great evening of music by the awesomely talented Calamatuer and food provided by Leisa, Andy and co at Rendevouz made for a pretty chilled out time – a big DUFI thanks to everyone who was there, who contributed and who made it all possible.
We were commissioned to produce a short film about Barron Taylor Street based on a piece of music by Calamatuer that had its premiere that night too – we will post it here shortly.

It’s been a while we know but it’s not because we have been sitting around doing nothing. Quite the opposite in fact…so much has happened in the last few months that it’s maybe better to give you just the bullet point version.

DUFI ART Ltd was formed in October incorporating all the work of DUFI, MOOSE77 and Fin Macrae Photography. Life was just getting too busy/complicated/chaotic and the edges were blurring so much. This hopefully makes things a bit simpler for us – time will tell!

The Alvaston Project (Derby) is well and truly underway and going well. Loving working with the people of Alvaston and getting responses from folk during this information gathering and consultation stage. Particularly enjoying our carvery nighta in the Blue Peter pub, meeting with Anne and Janet at the OAP Social Club and jarring David for his lack of Scottish newspapers!!

A feasibility study we were asked to consult on in Greenock has become a full blown project and is about to start production in the next few weeks. We will post some images of this soon but involves wall and ground based steelwork and lighting solutions (working in conjunction with LUC and Lightfolio). An exciting project with good local involvement too in the forrm of Local Heroes.

Working with Scottish and Southern Electricity and some of the local youngsters in Hilton, Inverness through the Calman Trust we are finalizing plans for the substation on Dell Road. Our largest ever outdoor spraypaint and stencil job but we are looking forward to painting this in May/June.

A new entry will appear shortly - just giving you the heads-up that "In Honour Of September" has been completed. The project was one part of Re:Imagining The Centre in Inverness and ran from the 9th to the 12th September. By all accounts a great success and from our point of view was great to work with some of our friends from Rough Cut Nation again.

Wow - where does time go?! Not a metaphysical question by the way, just an observation that so much seems to have happened over the last few months and that we have had hardly any time to breathe either individually in our own work or collectively as DUFI.

So first things first, The National Portrait Gallery of Scotland. Rough Cut Nation opened on the 7th August with crowds of people coming to see the work. Over 1000 people through the doors that day with people queuing to get in is pretty good...To say that the whole project has been a success would be an understatement! Richie Cumming and his team have done a fabulous job of curating and organising this show. It would be difficult to pick out highlights for us, as the whole show really is a collective effort. A mix of traditional freehand, stencil, sticker, paste-ups and throw-ups as well as sculpture, new technologies with work overlapping and spaces literally bleeding into each other.

Just a delight to work with the guys and girls there with a distinct lack of egos despite some serious talent on show...thanks everyone!

From a personal point of view we are both really happy with our own piece within the show and with the creative decisions we made along the way - either on our own or in consultation with the other artists. It was a challenge to work at such a large scale with a hand cut stencil but it was rewarding work as well (Even if we did cause a major disruption to the project by laying on 4 cans of paint in about 15 minutes!! Thankfully all was sorted and things could go on).

The response from you good folk out there was phenomenal - we got over three times as many words as we could use for the artwork and it was difficult to narrow it down to something we thought would be representative of the diverse views expressed. It was also a challenge to work out the best way to group these words, and in the end we decided to list them in alphabetic order - It just seemed that it would be too contrived to do it any other way and even a random selection would seem ordered!

What next? Well a couple of smaller projects we have to finish and then we will be working with a few folk from Rough Cut Nation on the Re:Imagining The Centre project in Inverness in September. Richie Cumming, Mike Inglis, Machism and Kirsty Whiten will all be coming to play with us which will be fun! Will give more details soon...

The National Portrait Gallery of Scotland will be hosting an exhibition later this year entitled Rough Cut Nation.

This unique multimedia project draws together a group of young artists from around Scotland to create a dramatic collaborative installation. For the Edinburgh Festival they will construct a remixed version of Scottish history as informed by street art and graffiti culture, painted, pasted and projected directly onto the walls of the Portrait Gallery.

The project updates William Hole's original decorative mural scheme of 1889-1898, depicting important events from Scotland's past. This new installation exploits the empty space produced by the Gallery's current closure for redevelopment.

As one of the artist duos involved we are interested in exploring religious iconography and the use of Jesus as a moral or social catalyst within both Scottish history and contemporary culture.

With that in mind we would like to ask you three questions:

1. Jesus- who/what was he?
2. Scotland - what (if any) impact has he had on Scotland's history?
3. What impact has Jesus had on Scotland past, present and future?

If you only want to respond to one of the questions, that would be fine. A single word or a couple of words answer is perfect - but if you want to write more then please feel free to do so. The crucial thing is to gather opinion from a broad range of people of all beliefs (or non-beliefs).

The answers that we collect from these questions will potentially form part of the final artwork, but will not be attributed to any one individual.

Our trip South to the East Midlands was an adventure and well worth the effort. We spent a good couple of days gathering some information about the town and also getting a feel for the place as well as meeting some of the good folk of Alvaston. We do mean "good folk" - we were made most welcome and found people enthused by the idea of regeneration in the place they love to call home. We are looking forward to putting our final proposal together and then hope we are selected ... we know we could all create something that we can be proud of!

As regular site visitors know, our blog titles almost always revolve around lyrics or song titles. Try as we might we couldn't find any for Alvaston although we did get Glen Campbells "Galveston" - a blast from the past for me (what is it about growing up in the Highlands and country music?!) Anyhow, the blog title are lyrics from a track called "Jet Set" by a rather good band called Derby from Portland, Oregon (home of many a good band...). Think these lyrics represent something of what we feel about the place.

The works on Baron Taylor Street (BTS), in Inverness, are now well underway. We have been working with the kids at Cauldeen Primary and they have come up with some great poems - two of which we are placing into the stonework on BTS. There will be a poem at each end of the street, sandblasted into the edges of a large central drainage channel.

The first poem went is just before Christmas, and the second will be installed in the next few weeks.

The pupils also came up with five word pairs for us, one of which will be placed next to each of the drains on BTS.

The last couple of years have seen some rather interesting shifts in media for DUFI. We have gone from working with spray paint to sandblasting stone, and now our latest ventures have taken us in a new direction again... cast iron!

We have recently designed the original drain gullies for Baron Taylor Street in Inverness. We worked in conjunction with Ballantines Creative Ironworks in Bo'ness.

The Inverness Old Town street project is moving along nicely - and although we have not posted about it recently, it has been very much alive!

To date we have posted five of the street text slabs on the blog, but over the last few months the project has been motoring along and we are now at the stage of laying the last few of the 24 total stones.

Listed below are a few tasters of some of the recent stones as well as some images to give you an idea of how they look once installed.

One of the DUFI projects that has been simmering on our little creative back burner for several months (like a good old pot of stew!) is a commission we recieved to produce works for the new health centre in Fort William.

As part of our research and development for this project we worked with Lochaber High School Support for Learning Department. We spent a morning with the young people in the department, and had a lot of fun doing chalk stencils as well as some great chat.

In the end, we decided to make our commission a tribute to these young people. Using their stories and anecdotes as inspiration and texture for the piece. As some of you might remember, when we mentioned this commission before, we said that it was going to be a series of four works, but in true DUFI style this has grown limbs! The final work is one piece called BELLASQUEAKTHUMPER, a series of seven portraits!

As some of you might remember - last summer we worked with some of the youngins in Brora to produce a stencil piece for the wall of the local co-op. As the shop was in the process of being renovated it was agreed that the hanging of the work would be postponed.

Well, time does fly! But the panels were finally fixed to the wall and, hat's off to the group, it looks good!

We were asked to produce a temporary installation in the newly refurbished Eden Court.

To combine our love for stencil art and music we decided to create "Teenage Kicks".

The installation included 22 LP’s mounted on the wall (as a rather large DUFI!), as well as a living room opposite (yes that is right, we created your gran's front room in the lobby of Eden Court), which included an record player, an 80's medical handbook (our instructions) and the school jotter (our visitors book).

Three of the records were spray painted, the other 19 were removable and could be played on the retro record player.

Now we would love to say that we grew up listening to early hip hop and alternative music, but the truth is it was a whole lot uglier than that.

Inverness is getting all holier than thou! The great artist Matt Baker has recently completed leading a team in the installation of the Three Virtues on Church Street in Inverness. The artwork was created after a year long process with local people suggesting ‘Virtues’ for 21st Century Inverness.

To help mark the launch (on 6 March) several artists were asked to create installations in the shop windows surrounding the virtues. As part of this, we created a two week long narrative in the shop front of a empty shop unit.

But do not fear, with DUFI the surreal is always near. We decided to characterise the virtues and ended up writing our own fable of the forest. The story was written in instalments, on the shop window, over the two weeks leading up to the event. And yes, the animals are real - but as exciting as all this was, I am sure they all felt a lot friskier before they were stuffed! (However, the badger seems to be a somewhat more sociable creature then we all expected – he now has his own bebo page).

Ok, we admit it, we have a problem. DUFI stencils are not getting any smaller. We have just completed our biggest DUFI to date - a 14.3x2.1M wall at Malliag High School.

The group we were working with were not the noisiest bunch we have worked with, but they had some great ideas, worked like weevils and created a stencil to be proud of.

I can't get no, cooperation.

Well, another DUFI has been born. We recently completed workshops with a group of future stencil artists in Brora. The project was sponsored by the Brora Cooperative and the 2x2M paneled stencil will be fixed to the side wall of the building.

Thanks to the COOP for being such great sponsors – and for cooperating (badum-ching!) – the blog title is the only song lyric I could find with the word cooperation. Yea I know the song is ‘I can’t get no satisfaction’, but thanks to Sesame Street we have the alternative lyrics – go on YouTube it, you know you want to.

Way back in the year of yon, the River Ness flood severely, and swept away the main bridge. However, like true Invernessians most folk stayed in the lofts of their crofts.

The street texts in Inverness are chugging along nicely. Here is the text for the fourth stone to go down. It has been placed outside the Old High gates, a site with a lot of history - St Columba apparently had a church here. On his way to Inverness the saint met the big bad Loch Ness Monster, but duly chased the beastie off. Hence the text on this stone.

Ok, first things first - sorry! Sorry it has taken us an age and a half to update this. Thankfully that is because we have been busy, as opposed to sitting playing the new PS3.

Well, it has been busy time in the DUFI den lately. We have just completed a guerrilla marketing campaign for the Go North music festival.

The festival was over four days, 7-8 June in Inverness and 9-10 June at one of the stages at the Rock Ness music festival. Some absolutely brilliant music. I think the best act for us was Oppenheimer (www.oppenheimermusic.co.uk) - if these guys don't become huge I will eat one of Fin's hats.

Anyway - our campaign included: limited edition A2 Posters, A3 fly posters, badges, limited edition T-shirts, badges, info packs and two stencils that we sprayed directly onto the road in Inverness city centre.

DUFI have recently been commissioned to produce four permanent artworks for the new Fort William Health Centre. As part of this project we will be working with Lochaber High School Support for Learning Department, involving young people with physical and learning disabilities.

We have just completed a set of workshops with a group of seven kids in Alness Academy. Despite being warned that it might be one of our toughest groups to work with, we had a great time and the group worked really hard.

However, it turns out that David (one of the smaller members of our group) was a diehard Springsteen fan and insisted on playing ‘Born In The USA’ on repeat for the three painting sessions. So on a very modest estimate we must have listened to that song over 30 times in six hours - resulting in us permanently deleting it from iTunes!

When they said you was high classed, well, that was just a lie.
